Moti Mahal of Gwalior city is one of the principal historical building of Gwalior. It has been the centre of state power in central India for more than 130 years. It was constructed in 1825 by Scindia rulers of Gwalior in Hindu architectural style. Moti Mahal has more than 300 rooms. Gold has been polished on the walls of many rooms and columns of this historical building. Baijatal a cistern which was constructed to as an Amphitheater in the water adds a pearl in the neckless. The gardens around Moti Mahal has an extensive network of Stone Fountains.
Moti Mahal of Gwalior City has a rich collection of wall paintings. Many of its rooms are painted with rich Hindu Art. Some of the prominent paintings include the mosaic work of coloured glasses and murals depicting Raag Raagini.
The Legislative Assembly of Madhya Bharat was conducted in the court hall ( Durbar Hall ) of Madhya Pradesh till 1958. The walls and roofs of Durbar hall have Golden Polish all over. The lights of the chandelier add golden lustre in the Durbar Hall whenever illuminated even in these days.
After the formation of Madhya Pradesh in 1958, The legislative assembly was shifted to Bhopal, after which the power centre of governance shifted to Bhopal. Although many offices of the State Government, Division and District level are still operating in Moti Mahal of Gwalior.

The main offices which are operating in the building of Moti Mahal include the commissioner of the Department of Land Records and Bandobast of Madhya Pradesh, Revenue Division, Commissioner Excise, Commissioner of Transportation, MP and Commissioner of Local Funds Examination and Commissioner Gwalior.
The glory of Moti Mahal, which was before 1947 or till November 1956, is no longer left. But this historic building is our heritage and the surrounding area is also a heritage zone, it could be preserved if the government and we the people of Gwalior have to save our legacy.
